Grace vs Gracious

These 2 words have got me thinking quite a bit lately...

grace [greys]
- noun
8. Theology.
a. the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.

versus

gra·cious [grey-shuhs]
– adjective

1. Characterized by kindness and warm courtesy
2. Of a merciful or compassionate nature.
3. Condescendingly courteous; indulgent.

It took me sometime.. better late than never to really understand what grace really is. I knew what it meant as an English definition but not so much in my heart till last year. And its really different when its experienced at the heart than just head knowledge. Am just thankful to have that understanding now and how it important it is to be really understood.

But what got me thinking is the difference between Grace and Gracious. Grace is the root word of Gracious and it has somewhat quite a different meaning. Most derivatives of root words are extension of the meaning of the root word - but still the same meaning(eg: like kind and kindness is both about giving). But Grace means receiving unmerited favour, while Gracious has to do giving and not receiving.

Interesting 2 English words which usually should have similar meaning... I wonder how is it represented in other languages? Maybe its represented as totally different words with different root words.. Just a thought...
